A police unit in South Lancashire has expanded its rural crime team, doubling its size to address issues impacting countryside communities.
This specialised team focuses on tackling crimes such as machinery theft, hare coursing, and heritage crime. Lancashire was among the first regions in the country to establish a dedicated rural crime unit, with other areas now adopting similar approaches.
Officer Sean Dalby emphasised the importance of deterring criminals, stating that rural areas in Lancashire are not easy targets. With approximately 70% of the county classified as rural and over 20% of residents living in these areas, the team plays a vital role in supporting local communities.
Since its formation in 2021, the unit has recovered 194 stolen vehicles and pieces of machinery and has made 57 arrests. Criminal groups have also been stealing GPS navigation systems from farms, with some devices valued at around £20,000 each.
Local farmer John Forshaw, who was targeted by thieves stealing four GPS systems worth a total of £80,000, described the significant impact of such crimes. He noted that the presence of dedicated officers in rural areas has led to a noticeable reduction in crime, including fly-tipping.
During routine patrols, officers remain vigilant for illegal activities such as hare coursing, particularly prevalent during this season. Officer Dalby highlighted the damage caused by offenders who break through gates, drive across fields, and disrupt wildlife.
The team collaborates closely with farmers, gamekeepers, and landowners, and their efforts have led to a 60% decrease in hare coursing incidents since 2021. They also tackle issues such as “cuckooing,” where criminals exploit farm properties for illegal activities, including cannabis cultivation.
Inspector James Neale stressed the importance of recognizing the unique challenges faced by rural communities and ensuring tailored policing strategies to address them effectively.
